Tasting Notes
Decanter: "Fountaingrove District is a little-known appellation located in the Mayacamas range in Sonoma County. Kick Ranch is set at 600m above sea level, and for this Cabernet, the elevation gives it intense flavours of dried plums, black cherries, and blackberries with olive tapenade. The tannins are firm, yet there's a sensual elegance that often comes from Cabernet at elevation. In this wine, the acid particularly stands out as an equal partner to the bold fruit and tannins."

Vineyard Profile
Kick Ranch Vineyard is situated on the western slope of Spring Mountain in the Mayacamas Mountains. Located in the Fountaingrove District appellation (AVA), which some refer to as the “Eden of the West,” the vineyard soil is comprised of Pleasanton-Haire complex. The vines are forced to dig deep into the soil due to the incredible drainage supplied by the soil complex, thus naturally balancing the vines with resulting low yields and beautifully concentrated fruit. The vineyard bathes in cool maritime breezes provided from the straight shot to the Petaluma wind gap while enjoying intense afternoon exposure. This results in dark, ripe, richly flavored fruit with remarkable acidity.
Production Notes
The 2021 growing season started off a bit cold but soon warmed up to normal temperatures. Sonoma County was truly blessed to miss the serious heat waves that affected other parts of California and the Northwest. Instead, we experienced a perfectly “normal” summer with moderate temperatures and foggy mornings. The ongoing dry conditions of the growing season lowered yields but the flavor concentration in the grapes was outstanding. We harvest our grapes before dawn in the cooler temperatures before sunrise. The grapes arrive at the winery cold and crisp within just hours of being harvested. We diligently hand-sort and destem; the berries then ferment in open-top, stainless-steel tanks. The wine is aged in oak barrels for approximately 22 months before finding its way into bottle.
